"Less is more" said Mies van der Rohe, the father of contemporary architectural aesthetics and minimalism, and he wasn't wrong! Just as the volumetric structures of a building can enhance or stifle a space, interior finishes can highlight and enrich rooms, or make them cold or oppressive for those who live in them.
Our
Dutch clients wanted to
make the most of the space available for the master bathroom, which was large but not excessively so, considering that both the bath and shower had to be kept together.
In order to maintain a fluid perception of the environment, and to camouflage the pillar and the technical space of the drains, the choice fell to
stone-effect porcelain stoneware, with a very soft texture rich in realistic details. The neutral colour, with subtle shading, recreates a
warm, relaxing ambience.A rectangular 75x150 size was chosen for both the
floor and wall coverings, in order to have a
minimum number of joints and to enhance the floor plan of the bathroom, which stretches lengthwise towards the window.
The shower tray area was also made in porcelain stoneware, but with a
non-slip finish to comply with safety regulations; the housing for the water drain was then created inside the tray.
All the walls were tiled up to the ceiling, to avoid interrupting the perception of height and to highlight the existing window and door type.
Functional niches were created in the walls of the bath and shower area, which were also tiled in the same material, with multi-purpose edge tiles cut on site at a 45° angle.
Despite the extremely simple, no-frills style of the room, a subtle
decorative effect was chosen for the back wall of the shower. A 30x30 wide tile mosaic from the same series as the tiles was chosen, naturally laid with
Mapei epoxy grouting to make it easier to clean the joints.
The bathroom furnishings naturally follow the mood of the wall coverings, featuring materials such as natural oak wood for the large washbasin shelf, steel for the taps and fittings and matt white ceramic accessories.
The cost of an operation like this depends on many factors: the size of the bathroom, the labour required and the accessories chosen.
